Sedentary Behaviour and Physical Activity Effects

Research and Provided Evidence

The majority of Canadians spend time being sedentary, which includes "activities that require a low energy expenditure (≤ 1.5 metabolic equivalents)" like sitting, lying or reclining, for example, individuals using a computer, watching tv, or playing video games.

  • On average, Canadians employed in full-time work were sedentary for 68.9% of their day, Only having 8,984 steps per day and 79.5 minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity.

  • In addition, only 18.5% met the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines. In addition,

  • Canadian adults are sedentary for 9.5 hours a day, thus reflecting on society's youth because children reflect the behaviour of their parents in childhood, thus, ultimately believing that the behaviour they are engaging in is the correct type of behaviour as they age.

Benefits of Physical Activity

Exercise is your own personal fountain of youth!!

  • Many health care experts regard exercise as the fountain of youth. Many men and women have embarked upon the quest for the fountain of youth during their lifetimes.

Mental Health

  • Individuals with less than 8 hours of sedentary behaviour had lower levels of anxiety and depression. Compared to those who engaged in sedentary behaviour greater than 8 hours a day.

  • Thus, sedentary behaviour has a significant effect on anxiety and depression.

  • Research shows people with a history of mental health problems were aging faster.

Obesity

  • A sedentary lifestyle is associated with weakened lipoprotein regulation and a greater risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality in adults.

  • A strong association of continuous sitting patterns with waist circumference, thus directly related to obesity-related health outcomes.

  • Obesity accelerates aging in the human liver resulting in an apparent age acceleration of 2.7 years for a 10-point increase in BMI, supporting the idea that obesity may accelerate the aging process

Injury Prevention

  • Sedentary behaviour is a substantial factor influencing the health of ageing subjects, and it is likely to impact the risk of falls.

  • Increased physical activity is a protective factor for falls in persons over 60 years old.

  • The importance of exercise in fall prevention indicates that greater attention should be given to a broad design of a life course approach to healthy ageing.

  • Tai Chi and programs that include multiple exercise categories (typically balance and practical exercises plus resistance exercises) help prevent falls.
